"In the national field, we should remark...Michael Dawson´s proyect, MAKU..."

Escuha, Dawson.

So many years watching Michael Dawson with “Los Dickens” made us think that the guitarist was only good for playing covers and for creating any kind of tribute to any existing foreign band in the extinct TV show Jammin´. For those who didn´t know that his talent was beyond appearing every week on the show of PLUS TV, Maku has just been released, an album where the musician surprises not only for his guitar skills but also for his talent to compose, that was an unknown vein in his career until now.

Francois Peglau (ex Los Fuckin` Sombreros) lends his voice to nine of the 11 songs adding an exquisite touch thanks to his vocal timbre, using falsetos many times to give a very personal touch to the themes. That way he turns to be Dawson`s star partner in an album that shines for its mixture of sounds that goes in clave of bossa nova, dare in to reggae and even celebrates with something tropical and a bolero. Iván Mindreau (Libido´s – famous rock band - drummer) and Pochi Marambio (Tierra Sur – famous reggae band in Lima) complete the musical laboratory.

There´s no doubt that Maku´s debut (Michael Dawson´s alter ego) is one of the best albums of 2008, a risky proposal and even shy in a period of time where the overproduction and make up is what is usually selling in the stand shelves of the stores. But we have to make clear that in its simplicity and well achieved production lays the magic of its beauty, a formula that we hope to attend live soon. Listen up, Dawson.

On the top cover, an animal footprint that doesn´t admit identification. Under the name “Maku” is Michael Dawson Pastor, who proudly signs each theme of his debut album with the conviction that there´s a lot to celebrate here. He´s not wrong. This tasty vaudeville of bossa nova, reggae and tropical rhythms is better than other fancier releases for its humbleness and straight ideas.

Maku is independent material, with a shy profile even against itself, but it´s one of those albums that makes you sing without notice when you started, those that you want to share by MP3 to your friends if it wasn´t politically incorrect to promote something like that from this corner.
Francois Peglau (singer of Fuckin´ Sombreros) was his closest accomplice in this prank, collaborating on the production and arrangements, besides singing – in a funny tone sometimes, it´s true – nine of eleven themes. Dawson composes and plays the guitars, but it´s precisely Peglau´s contribution what rounds the freshness of “El mismo de ayer”, de presentation card “Maku”, and the racings of “Someone to blame”. The only doubt is how Dawson – Maku will recreate the sound live.

This is urgent because if there has been more good things like Maku around, it would really shame us to prove to what we are submitted by the radio stations.

Vale."

A little more interesting than the new stuff from Coldplay is Maku, an unclassifiable Peruvian musical project – is it a band? A solo artist?. The album doesn´t gives more clues – which the most important factotum is Michael Dawson. He is known for his facet as a guitarist of a well known cover band, the musician surprises as a remarkable composer in the eleven songs that goes between Jamaican, Brazilian rhythms and folk ballads. Francois Peglau, Rafo de la Cuba and Pochi Marambio sing in it. Look for it with magnifying glasses because it seems that the distribution is a disaster. Thumbs up

Many will surely recall Michael Dawson because of his continuing participations in the TV show “Jammin´”, as a member of Los Dickens (official band of the show specialized in covers) or taking part on those endless and insignificant tributes to everyone. The first impression that leaves the eleven cuts of Maku´s debut album, Dawson´s musical project, is that it´s more rewarding to listen to him playing his own songs than, for mention anyone, Lenny Kravitz´s. Although it has its up and downs, this album never stops to be stimulant: it could be when he claims a genuine fervor to his Beatle imprint (with an endearing version of “In my life” as a captivating album ending) or when he ventures almost blindly through altillanos territories (or carioca´s, like in “El mismo de ayer”). Dawson sounds always honest, including the few moment of frank self indulgence (“I´m not going to love again”, wail the invited vocalist Rafo de la Cuba – who, by the way, is preparing an album that promise to be as same as surprising – in “Tanto tiempo”). Finally, the band that joins Dawson in this happy adventure includes musicians of large trajectory and unquestionable talent, such as, Pochi Marambio, the multitalented Leslie Patten or the `Fuckin´ Sombrero´ Francois Peglau, that in “Flower girl” gives his best vocal performance of his entire career.
